Service Companies all over the world struggle to execute projects which require fresh development or something which needs to be done from scratch. It surprises me that this is common to industry majors to startups. What are major factors which contribute to this.
1. Estimates - This plays huge role in this and no wonder the different methodologies which one can claim, one never get this right and one keeps going back to this as a blame game during the mid way of the project to find fault in
2. Solution - I believe most of the projects struggle due to not getting the solution and approach right and believe that all new aspects pertaining to agile way of working can address this. If sufficient time is not given for this and not thought through all pros and cons, one can keep reworking through the lifecycle of the project
3. Big picture - Most of the companies and team forget the big picture of the project and end up doing things which address short term goals and end of burning time and resources late in the project life cycle
4. Resources - having right resources at right time and having the core team involved in the entire duration of the project is key for the success of the fresh development project
5. model - what model the project is getting executed is key to it success, fixed bid or time and material. There is nothing right or wrong, but my personal opinion is to execute a fresh development in fixed bid is tough for services company

Are Indians good thinkers and doers
I presume this question would have to each one of us. I feel though things have changed lot over last 2 decades where in we are taking on the world in all spheres, somehow due to legacy of history and colonialism I tend to agree with a view we are good in execution but fall short in coming up with ideas ( thinkers)
I think Indians are very good at parallel processing, multitasking or implementing tasks given in writing. However when it comes to actually thinking on concept and getting it off the ground, sometimes things tend to skip and lack in getting it conceptualized.
I feel quality of the work done by us is poor, as we always look at completing the job.

Eternal Question of Services vs Product Company
It is an eternal question which most of us in IT software world will keep looking for an answer. My view of this after working for nearly 10 years in this industry is both have their merits and de-merits and would finally depend on an individual where he/she feels comfortable in.
Please find few thoughts on the same. I would appreciate views and comments on the same

- Services company provide a best opportunity to improve your softer skills and you need to have strong people management skills in services company compared to product company
- Most of you might debate this, but you need to be technically good to survive in product company. In a service company you can get away with it
- You will be always firefighting in services company for different issues compared to product company.
- Socially services company are better compared to product company
- Delivery pressures are lesser in a product company compared to services company ( again one can debate this)
- Services company always looks individuals or team members in terms of billability
- Technical growth curve and opportunity to do different things technically is far better in product company compared to services company ( Architects will agree with me on this)
- Ownership of product or software or work is better in a product company compared to services company
- Most of the services company don't know how to use the resources at the top level in comparison to a product company. Example :- In a product company a resource with 8 years experience will also be a developer
- I feel it is difficult for a resource to move from services to product company, feel other way round might be little bit easier
